The Oklahoma History Center provides a wide range of opportunities for the community that contributes to the growth and education of Oklahoma. One of these opportunities is the Volunteer Services Program. The VSP offers a variety of positions and responsibilities for people who want to contribute their spare time to educate the public and share the pride and history of Oklahoma.

Our service areas include:

Visitor Services and Admissions
The Visitor Service and Admissions volunteer is often the first contact for visitors. Visitor Services volunteers should be able to talk with a variety of patrons, have a general knowledge of the OKC metro area, be patient and courteous under all types of circumstances, be able to answer endless questions, maintain a warm, helpful and friendly attitude and provide general tours to scheduled visitors as needed. Visitor Services volunteers are asked to work a minimum of 2 shifts per month.

Responsibilities
  • Provides a warm welcome, collects admission fees and answers visitor questions.
  • Provides information about exhibits, activities, services, and programs available in the Museum.
  • Provides directions to the different areas of the museum.
  • Keeps brochures and maps stocked.
  • Provide general information about other Metro attractions as requested.

Gallery Hosts
The Gallery Host position helps visitors understand topics covered in the various galleries. Gallery Hosts should be able to physically navigate through the museum, talk with a variety of patrons, be patient and courteous, be able to answer endless questions, and maintain a warm and friendly attitude, while treating museum visitors as though they were guests in your home. Gallery Hosts are asked to work a minimum of 2 shifts per month.

Responsibilities
  • Orient visitors to the topics of each gallery.
  • Point out places to start or include in their visit.
  • Answer general questions about subject areas in the galleries and provide directions to other areas of the OHC.
  • Monitor and alert museum staff of any problems with or in the galleries.
  • Help patrons in emergency situations.


Docents
Docents provide in-depth programs or tours to scheduled visitors on a pre-selected topic. Programs and tours are provided for all ages. Docents may train for certain age groups and topic areas. Additional hours of training and preparation are required to achieve Docent designation. In addition, a proficiency test within the chosen subject area will be required. A sample tour must be given to staff for evaluation. Docents are asked to conduct 2 or more tours per month.

Responsibilities
  • Work closely with the Education Department developing and conducting subject tours.

Living History Docents
Living History Docents provide accurate historical information to visitors and scheduled groups through first and/or third person interpretation. Additional hours of training and preparation are required to achieve Docent designation. A proficiency test in the chosen subject area will be required. Those with a love of history and experience with public performance are encouraged to apply. Scheduling for this position is an on-call, as needed basis. Interpreters are asked to work 6 or more events per year.

Responsibilities
  • Work closely with the Director of Education developing and presenting programs.
  • Provide props and costumes in conjunction with OHC.

OHC Gift Shop Support
Volunteers in this area will assist the museum store manager with a variety of daily tasks that may include inventory, stocking merchandise, establishing displays, providing customer service, assisting customers with transactions, etc. Attention to detail and accuracy are important. Customer service skills or retail experience are a plus. On-the-job training will be provided. Museum store volunteers are asked to work 2 shifts per month, which are scheduled through the Museum Store Manager and the Volunteer Coordinator.

Responsibilities
  • Assist with daily museum store activities.

Special Events Hosts
Special Event Hosts assist with a variety of duties for special events held at the museum including private parties, special openings, etc. On-the-job training will be provided. Some pre-event orientation or training may be required. Scheduling is an on-call, as needed basis. Special Event Volunteers are asked to work 6 or more events per year.

Responsibilities
  • Varies with each individual event.
  • Could be a gallery host, help set-up or teardown an event, act as security, etc.
  • Responsibilities will be provided with each event posting.

On-Call
These volunteers are willing to be called on short notice to work an event or fill a shift either because of a need for additional support or volunteer absence. This type of volunteer may fill in for any of the above positions. On-Call Volunteers are asked to fill at least 6 shifts/events per year.

Responsibilities
  • Varies with each individual assignment as detailed in the above descriptions.


Behind-the-Scenes
Behind-the-Scenes Volunteers provide a variety of support services to the other areas of the museum; curatorial, research, etc. These volunteers are under the supervision of the department for which they are assigned. Their hours are clocked the same as general volunteers and they are subject to the same guidelines. On-the-job training will be provided. BTS Volunteers will arrange their work schedule through the Volunteer Coordinator and the department to which they are assigned. These positions will begin in 2006.

Responsibilities
  • Variety of tasks as designated by the department supervisor.
  • Assist with daily activities as assigned in the Collections department.
